A Safer Home Starts With Small Changes

A Safer Home Starts With Small Changes

When we visit a family for the first time, we usually notice the same few things: a loose rug here, a dim hallway there, a favorite chair that has grown a little hard to rise from. None of these are alarming on their own. Together, though, they shape how safely — and how confidently — a person lives at home.

The good news is that the changes that matter most are usually small, inexpensive, and barely noticeable. Here is where we suggest families begin.

Start with light

Eyes need more light with age — roughly two to three times more than at twenty-five. Walk through the home in the evening and look for shadows at doorways, stairs, and the path between bedroom and bathroom. Nightlights with warm, motion-activated bulbs are one of the kindest changes you can make.

Make walkways generous

Clear a path at least three feet wide through the rooms your loved one uses most. Tack down or remove loose rugs, move electrical cords along walls, and keep frequently used items between waist and shoulder height so no one is tempted to climb or stoop.

Respect the bathroom

A sturdy grab bar by the toilet and in the shower, a non-slip mat, and a shower chair transform the room where most home injuries happen. Choose bars made for the purpose — towel racks are not grab bars.

Keep the story of the home

A home that looks like a hospital stops feeling like home. Frame changes gently: a beautiful wooden grab bar, a chair in the color she has always loved, better light over the reading nook. Safety should be felt, not seen everywhere.

Walk the pathway together

Every home is different, and every family's worries are different too. If you would like a second pair of eyes, our free in-home consultation includes a gentle walk-through of the home and honest, practical suggestions — no obligation, no pressure.
